An apparent third attack on Sony's game network may have been thwarted

A CNET report written by Erica Ogg May 5 may have given Sony the chance it needed to prevent yet another attack on its systems that was possibly planned for the past weekend. The as-yet-unknown hackers informed CNET via an Internet relay channel about a third strike they were planning on Sony's servers. They had planned to publicize all or part of the information they had available to them from Sony's servers, which, from the source, included customers' names, addresses, and credit card numbers.

"Apparently Sony saw that article because the last server I could access is offline now..." said one of the members of the relay. "'s probbaly (sic) being patched like the other servers. There goes our window."

According to CNET, Sony had removed a name list of 2,500 contestants with partial addresses for a contest held in 2001. Whether this was the same information the hackers were going for is unknown.
