Kyle gets some hands-on time with the newest tactical MMO published by Square Enix

Wakfu is a turn-based tactical MMORPG and a continuation of past titles Dofus and Dofus Arena. In the game, your job as the player is to travel around the world, play different classes and learn new professions, all while fighting different creatures and earning new skills and loot.

I was given 15 minutes of playtime to test the game and get a feel for the combat mechanics, farming mechanics, and navigation. However, despite the time with the game, I felt that I couldn't get a firm grasp on how to play or how to be proficient at it. Sure, eventually I was able to navigate and control the avatar, but I never felt comfortable playing it, nor did I ever feel that I had a firm grasp of the mechanics.

That is the problem with games like this and other MMOs. Fifteen minutes? Heck, even a whole hour is not nearly enough time to become familiar with the game and understand its inner workings. So this preview might be a little unfair in judging something that I clearly did not get enough time with.

Wakfu's combat played very similar to any other turn-based tactical game like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre. You take your character, initiate combat, and use a variety of attacks and spells to defeat your enemies. It plays just like it should, and once you get the hang of it, it feels perfectly normal if you've played other tactical RPGs.

As it stands, Wakfu has nothing new or innovative to offer outside the MMO and tactical RPG realm. However, keep in mind that 15 rushed minutes is not the proper time frame in which to test this game thoroughly, nor is the frantic, crazy atmosphere of E3 the perfect environment to play a game like this.
