Hopefully Sonic's got more to offer than this
Los Angeles, CA, USA

Sonic launched his own kart racing game to battle the multitude of kart racers on the market, once again chasing his rival Mario for a video game crown. Unfortunately, his appearance on Apple's iOS leaves a bit to be desired. Namely, anything memorable.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is your standard kart racing game. It also uses your standard driving controls on iOS -- you tilt the device left or right to steer left or right. There are on-screen controls to accelerate, brake, use power up items, etc. There's even a rocket in the game that seems to be a blatant ripoff of Mario Kart's blue shell.

The stage I got to demo was modeled in Sonic's art style. It wasn't anything spectacular to look at, though that kind of criticism can be mitigated by the fact that this is an iOS title. The power ups seemed like your standard power ups, taking many pages from Mario Kart's book. The driving experience was enjoyable enough, given the iOS' tilting controls. I did fairly well, considered that I'm not used to tilting an iOS to drive.

Unfortunately, the only thing memorable from the experience was that it seemed like another run-of-the-mill kart racer with nothing unique to offer. Sega still has a little bit of time before the game's release; I certainly hope it's used to beef up the game a bit and offer something above and beyond what most kart racers offer.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing releases for all iOS devices later this month.
